Learning Activity
How can you help your children develop a positive body image and relate to food in a healthy way?
Parents are role models and should try to practice patterns of behavior they would like their children to follow. Like any other skill children learn, developing a healthy body image and diet is a process that needs
to be worked at and practiced.
By following these practical steps, you will play
an important role in preventing self and body image problems from
occurring in your children:
-
Help them develop an identity based on their inner strengths, not on
appearance.
-
Gain historical perspective on current unhealthy body image attitudes.
-
Take a body image history to learn when and how your child became
sensitized to the look and feel of their body.
-
Understand normal weight gain during puberty.
-
Respect genetic diversity of body size and shape.
-
Become aware of the dangers of dieting.
-
Develop incentives for healthy eating and active lifestyles.
-
Teach them to think critically about media messages.
-
Resist unhealthy cultural pressures regarding weight and dieting.
